Cheshire’s Caroline Marron wins English senior championship

Cheshire’s Caroline Marron (pictured) achieved her main goal of the season when she won a nailbiting final to become English senior champion at Littlestone, Kent.

She took the title when she holed a testing, downhill 10-foot putt to defeat Buckinghamshire’s Carole Weir on the 18th green. “I am absolutely over the moon. I’m going to cry!” she said.

Meanwhile, Surrey’s Debbie Richards won Flight Two with a 4/2 victory over local member Geraldine Bray. It was her first appearance in an England senior event and she said: “I am just so pleased – but it hasn’t sunk in yet.”

Caroline Marron, the 2001 English strokeplay champion, took an early grip on the championship final as she demonstrated the superb short game which has been her trademark of the week.Carole struggled around the greens over the opening holes but, as she settled into the game, the players matched each other shot for shot and halved eight consecutive holes from the seventh.

However, Caroline extended her lead to three up when she got the better of the slippery 15th green. With just three holes left to play she seemed to have one hand on the trophy – but Carole had other ideas. Her husband-caddy told her: “If you finish four, three, four you can win this.” She almost did it, winning the 16th with a birdie four and the 17th with a great par three after her drive finished in a tricky spot to the right of the green.

On the par five 18th her second shot finished just right of the green, while Caroline was in a similar position for three. Carole chipped up safely, but her ball ran comfortably past the pin and she missed the birdie putt. Caroline putted up the slope to with 10ft of the pin and, when the time came, she demonstrated nerves of steel and rolled the crucial par putt into the hole.

“I’ve been struggling with my driver all week and when you’re under pressure that’s what goes – and it did on the last few holes,” said Caroline, who hit seven fairways in the final. Her boyfriend, Bromborough professional Geoff Berry, has been trying to solve the problem over the phone! Interestingly, both finalists have been working with psychologist Karl Morris through their county training and both paid tribute to his influence.

Caroline said: “I really, really wanted to win this and we’ve been working on goal setting with Karl Morris. This was my goal and I’ve been working on my putting to achieve it.” Carol, who is the Buckinghamshire first team captain, has been working with Karl Morris on her pre-shot routine.

Despite losing she was delighted with her performance: “I am just so proud of myself,” she said. In Flight Two Debbie Richards demonstrated fine ball striking and a neat short game. She was in charge throughout her final after taking the lead at the second hole.

Her opponent sank a number of clutch putts for halves but Debbie won the 15th to go three up and then finished with a flourish: with a birdie on the par five 16th for victory. Debbie, who was a Welsh girl international, is a member at Burhill and Rye, where she is ladies’ champion.

She’s also in the Surrey squad and plays for the second team. Her husband is English Women’s Golf Association non-executive director Bill Richards – who encouraged her to enter this event. Results

Fiona leads qualifiers for English senior championship

Five times Scottish women's amateur championship finalist Fiona Anderson, originally from Blairgowrie, leads the qualifiers for the match-play stages of the English senior championship at Littlestone, Kent.

Fiona, who spent her working life as a banker, has lived in Lancashire for the past 16 years and plays at Formby Ladies.

She beat Christine Middleton (Cruden Bay) in the 1987 Scottish final at Nairn but lost in four other finals to players of the calibre of Belle Robertson (1980), Gillian Stewart (1983), Shirley Lawson (1988) and Catriona Lambert, Matthew to be (1991).

Miss Anderson took the top spot at Littlestone with a second-round score of one-over 74 and a 36-hole total of 152. In the first round she will play England senior international Janet (Collingham) Melville who won a play-off for the 16th and final place in the championship matchplay flight.

"I’m delighted,” said Fiona. “It was much easier today. The wind was not as strong but it was quite cold and so the ball was not travelling so far. But it was gorgeous and the course is in excellent condition and the greens are superb.”

Fiona, who was also a GB&I international (1987 Vagliano Trophy match) and captained Scotland internationals teams, played very steadily, with two bogeys on the way out and one birdie on the way home. Otherwise it was pars all the way.

She had just one three-putt, for bogey on the third, and was happy to settle, mostly, for two putting. However, she did find the hole with one putt when necessary, for example when she got up and down for par from a “deadly” place on the sixth, and for birdie on the 12th.

“I haven’t had the pleasure of playing here before but I do realise it’s a course that takes a lot of knowing and that there are some places that are no-go areas!”

Defending champion Chris Quinn, from Hampshire, is the second seed after she moved up the leaderboard with a two-over 75. Chris - who won both English senior titles last year - opened her challenge with a first-round 81 which she described as “defensive”. But normal service was resumed with her 75:

“Today was a lot better. At this stage you have to be careful not to be too defensive, you have to play decent golf on this course.”

She got off to an excellent start with birdies on the first two holes and produced two matching halves, each of one-over par. It might have been better: she was on the front of the long 16th in two, but three-putted for par.

But as Chris pointed out: “That was my only three-putt of the day, instead of four yesterday.”

The leading 16 players qualified for the championship match-play flight and the next 16 went into Flight Two. Pat Wrightson (Huddersfield), who lost the play-off for the last championship place, became the top qualifier in Flight Two.

Three Littlestone members are involved in the match-play stages. Julie Ballard qualified for the championship flight while Geraldine Bray and Rosemary Smallman are in Flight Two. The matches will begin at 8.30am tomorrow, starting with the championship flight, and spectators are welcome.

in English seniors' qualifying in Kent

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
Surrey’s Roz Adams scored two-over par 75 to take the halfway lead in qualifying for the English senior championship at Littlestone, Kent today.
The senior international coped well with a tricky wind and finished three shots clear of the field. Her closest challenger, on 78, is Lancashire’s former Scottish champion, Fiona Anderson (pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency), from Blairgowrie, while Lincolnshire’s Pat West and Surrey’s Carole Caldwell are a shot further back.
Defending champion Chris Quinn of Hampshire – who won both English senior titles last year – is handily placed in a share of ninth place after returning 81.
Littlestone’s Julie Ballard leads the local challenge after she scored a very steady 83 to share 16th place. Her club colleague Rosemary Smallman finished with a birdie for 86 and is in a group in 35th place.
The first round was played in bright sunshine but cool temperatures, particularly in the morning, and the changing direction of the wind made club selection challenging.
“The wind made it interesting,” said Roz Adams, who had three birdies in her round. “It was a case of trying not to make too many mistakes and holing a few putts. The greens are beautiful, absolutely stunning - if you can’t putt on these, you can’t putt on anything!”
Overall, she declared herself: “Very pleased. It’s still early in the season and it’s nice to put in a steady round.”
Spalding’s Pat West completed her round in style, playing the last five holes in one-under par. “I enjoyed it,” she said afterwards. “The wind was moving around and made you think about the clubs all the time, but I has some lucky bounces and managed to sink some good putts. Today the gods were with me!”
After tomorrow’s second qualifying round the top 16 players will go forward to contest the championship match-play. The next 16 will play in Flight Two.

Volcanic Dust keeps Scots at home and KOs Portmarnock seniors' match

The Scotland veterans v Ireland seniors ladies match fell victim to the Volcanic Dust at 25,000ft!
The annual match for the Mary McKenna Salver was due to be hosted by the Irish at Portmarnock, Dublin on Sunday and Monday, but, with all flights cancelled and the ferry full with last minute bookings, there was no way the Scots could get across the Irish Sea.
Skipper Pamela Williamson told Kirkwoodgolf: "Our match is postponed till October, date to be confirmed. Sad, but we are all off for a game on The Duke's!"

Scotland vets' team to play Irish Seniors at Portmarnock

Wales' Jane Rees wins Spanish seniors title

Welsh senior international Jane Rees, a member of Hendon Golf Club, Middlesex, has won the Spanish senior ladies open amateur championship at Novo Sanct Petri, Cadiz.
And Wales provided one half of the winning duo of Vicki Thomas and Ireland's Sheena McElroy in the earlier Spanish senior ladies international pairs championship at the same venue.
Jane did not just win the Spanish individual tie - she ran away from the opposition, finishing eight shots clear over only two rounds with scores of 73 and 78 for 151.
Germany's Tessa Oldenbourg was runner-up with rounds of 80 and 79 for 159.
In the international pairs event, Vicki and Sheena had a 72 in the better-ball round and an 80 in the foursomes round for 152. They won by one stroke from the Spanish partnership of Cristina Marsans and Catalina Castillejo with the the third couple, Maria Pia Allende and Bufill Estany finishing five shots behind the winners on 157.

THREE TIED FOR LEAD AT HARDER HALL

INVITATIONAL WITH ONE ROUND TO GO

The 55th Harder Hall Women's Invitational has one round left at Harder Hall Country Club, Sebring, Florida with three players tied for the lead on three-under-par 213 and twelve golfers within five shots of the lead.
Defending champion, Candace Schepperle, pictured, played her way into the final grouping by shooting a third-round, par-matching 72 to tie second-round leader Dolores White (Wake Forest University). Kyle Roig also shot 72 to tie for the lead.
Stirling University's Rachel Cassidy, pictured, from Dublin took over as the leading British & Irish player with a third-round 73 for 225, displacing English girls champion Holly Clyburn (Woodhall Spa) who slumped to a 79 today for 227.
Majorca-based Lauren Mackin, a Ranfurly Castle member, remains the top Scot with a 78 for 230.
The Ben Roman Division for seniors ended after 54 holes with Jill Blackwood winning a chip-off to claim the over-50s championship.

Holly Clyburn in challenging position

with a par-matching 72

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY ENGLISH WOMEN'S GOLF ASSOCIATION
England international Holly Clyburn kept up her fine transatlantic form to challenge the leaders in the Harder Hall Invitational, the first event on the amateur women’s Orange Blossom Tour in Florida.
Holly (Woodhall Spa), pictured right by Cal Carson Golf Agency, shot a level par 72 in the opening round and is two shots behind a trio of American players who share first place. Another US golfer, the 14-year-old star, Alexis Thompson, is sandwiched in between on 71.
Play was delayed by rain for 90 minutes and 14 competitors have yet to complete their first round.
Last year, Holly finished seventh on her first appearance in this 72-hole strokeplay event. The 18-year-old English girls’ champion has arrived at Harder Hall fresh from a fine performance in the Women’s Dixie Amateur, also in Florida, where she tied for second place.
Holly is also the reigning French U-18 Open champion, the Faldo Series girls’ title-holder and the winner of the 2009 English Women’s Golf Association girls’ Order of Merit, sponsored by Lorrin Golf. She is in the GB&I squad for this year’s Curtis Cup team.

Lauren Mackin from Majorca leads

Scots in rainy start at Harder Hall

Majorca-based Scot Lauren Mackin, a member at Ranfurly Castle Golf Club, was the third best placed British or Irish player in the rain-hit first round of the Harder Hall Women's Invitational, the first event on the Orange Blossom Tour for female amateurs in Florida.
Lauren, pictured right, who has successes as a runner on her sporting CV, returned a two-over-par 74 over the 6,151yd course at Sebring to be lying joint 16th behind the three joint leaders, Taylor Karle (Arizona), Dolores White (Florida) and Kyle Roig (Florida).
British girls champion and Curtis Cup team place contender Holly Clyburn from Woodhall Spa, Lincolnshire headed the challenge from this side of the Atlantic. Winner of the Nick Faldo Series' girls' title in Brazil and joint second in last week's Women's Dixie Amateur in Florida, Holly matched the par of 72 to share fifth place.
Another member of the GB&I Curtis Cup squad for the 2010 match at Essex County Club, US-based teenager Stephanie Meadow was joint ninth with a 73.
Stephanie is a student at the Hank Hainey International Golf Academy, Hilton Head, South Carolina and hails from Northern Ireland where she is a member of Royal Portrush Golf Club.
Stirling University's Kesley MacDonald (Nairn Dunbar) and Rachel Cassidy (The Island, Dublin) were in joint 35th place after returning 78s.
Another Stirling student, Rebecca Wilson from Monifieth had a 81 for joint 52nd place.
Welsh international Lucy Gould (Bargoed), a student at East Tennessee State University and a Curtis Cup squad member, had an 83 for a share of 62nd place.
Stirling University's Harriet Beasley from Woburn was in joint 72nd place after an 86.
Play was held up for 90min because of rain and 14 players were unable to finish their rounds because of darkness. They included Stirling students Jordana Graham from Southerness and Eilidh MacKay (Nairn Dunbar).
Fourteen-year-old Alexis Thompson from Coral Springs, Florida, winner of the Junior Orange Bowl girls' title at Coral Gables, Florida over the Festive period and joint runner-up alongside Holly Clyburn at the Women's Dixie Amateur, is handily placed in fourth spot, only one stroke behind the joint leaders with a one-under-par 71.
Defending champion Candace Schepperle (Birmingham, Alabama) is on the same 72 mark as Holly.

The brutal cold winds that swept over Heron Bay Golf Club, Coral Springs, Florida during Saturday's third round of the Women's Dixie Amateur championship made moving day a truly memorable experience for the best women's amateurs in the world. Sunday's final round will feature a final pairing of three players that will surely all make their marks on the world's professional tours in the very near future. Lindy Duncan (pictured right) of Davie, Florida and Duke University fired the round of the day with a two-under par 70 to tie with Alexis Thompson of Coral Springs, Florida in the lead at five-under-par 211.
England's Holly Clyburn shot a 75 to put her three strokes off the lead.
Sandra Changkija of Orlando, Florida is four strokes back after complimenting her 72 and 70 with a 73 on Saturday.
The Inaugural Senior Dixie Amateur's final round ended as many expected it would. Three time US Senior amateur champion Diane Lang fired an impressive 73 to hold onto her five-shot lead that she took into the final round.
Making the strongest move of the day was Lisa Schlesinger of Laytonsville, Maryland whose field-leading 70 in the final round gave her a second-place finish, one stroke ahead of Brenda Pictor of Marrietta, Georgia who finished who finished with a total of 224.

NEWS RELEASE ISSUED BY THE ENGLISH WOMEN' S GOLF ASSOCIATION

England international Holly Clyburn had a hole-in-one as she took the first-round lead in the Women’s Dixie Amateur Championship in Florida with a five-under par 67.

Eighteen-year-old Holly (Woodhall Spa) aced the 150yd 5th hole. Her super-shot helped her to a two-stroke lead over her playing partner, 14-year-old Alexis Thompson, Coral Springs, Florida, who was the 2007 Dixie Champion and won the Junior Orange Bowl girls' title earlier in the week.

The English girls’ champion from Lincolnshire returned her score as winds picked up during the day, making the 6,500yd lay-out at Heron Bay Golf Club, Coral Springs a true test for some of the world’s top ranked female amateurs.

Americans Lindy Duncan of Florida and Brittany Smith of California are both three strokes back after shooting 70.

The 2008 Dixie Amateur champion, Candace Schepperle from Birmingham, Alabama and Duke University, is four shots back after her 74.

The top 50 players plus ties will make the cut after the second round.

Holly, who is also the French Under-18 open champion and the Faldo series girls' champion, won the English Women’s Golf Association girls’ order of merit for 2009. She is in the GB&I squad for the 2010 Curtis Cup team.

Entries close around the middle of this month for the February 13-20 programme which comprises of a better-ball pairs (male partners permitted) on the first Saturday, a 36-hole stroke play on the Monday and Tuesday and a 54-hole stroke-play on the Thursday-Friday-Saturday. SCOTLAND CLINCH FIRST SENIORS

TITLE BY BEATING WALES

There may be many a slip twixt cup and lip - but Scotland made none on the final day of the Senior Women's Home International Matches at Newport Golf Club, Wales today.

Having beaten first Ireland and then England, the Scots won the title and the Sue Johnson Trophy for the first time, completing a 100 per cent winning record through the three days by beating last year's winners, Wales, 5 ˝-2 ˝ today.

England, trailing 2-1 after the foursomes, rallied to draw 4-4 with Ireland and finished with 1 1/2pt, to be runners-up ahead of Wales (1pt) and Ireland (1/2pt).

Skipper Pamela Williamson's Scotland team – unlike their younger "sisters" in the Women's Home Internationals at Irvine three weeks ago - showed no sign of last-day nerves as they captured the morning foursomes by 2 ˝ to ˝ against Wales to make their task in the five afternoon singles that much easier.

They began the afternoon play needing only 1 ˝ pt for a draw which would have been enough to clinch the over-50s team championship but the rampant Scots had their sights set higher than that and had three singles winners.

Heather Anderson (Alyth) beat the Senior British champion Vicki Thomas by one hole.

Fiona De Vries (St Rule), who beat Pamela Valentine by 5 and 3, ending the series with a perfect 6pt from six matches was the MVP of the tournament.

Tain's Mary Smith, who helped Northern Counties win the Scottish women's county championship last week at Baberton, beat Jane Rees by 4 and 3 for her fifth point in six outings. What an end of season it's been for Mary!

Mention should be made of Dunbar's Noreen Fenton who played only in the foursomes each day – and won each time in partnership with Fiona de Vries.

And also that Scotland went to Wales without their potential star player – Lorna Bennett (Ladybank) who withdrew last week due to domestic reasons. But Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose), who took Lorna's place, played, as they say "a blinder." Skipper Williamson used Kathleen only in the singles and she won two out of three ties.

DETAILS OF THE SCOTLAND v WALES SINGLES

Heather Anderson v Vicki Thomas was a game of two halves – the Scot had the better of the first nine, the Welsh player not losing a hole after the turn. Anderson birdied the second and the fifth on her way to a three-hole lead after eight holes.

That was as good as it got for the Scot. Thomas won the 11^th and 15^th to be only one down on the 16^th tee. But Smith managed to halve the last three holes for a win she will remember while Vicki will want to forget the three days! As the new Senior British champion, she was expected to lead by example for Wales but she won only one game out of six.

Kathleen Sutherland, who came into the Scotland team only last week when star player Lorna Bennett had to withdraw for domestic reasons, lost her 100 per cent winning record when she lost by 4 and 2 to Ann Lewis.

Lewis birdied the seventh to go one up and also won the eighth before Sutherland birdied the ninth to get back to one down. The Welsh player promptly birdied the 10^th to regain a two-hole lead which Sutherland cut back to one hole by winning the 11^th. The exchange of holes continued at the 12^th which Lewis won to regain a two-hole lead. Lewis wrapped up a 4 and 2 victory by winning the 15^th and 16^th.

De Vries won the second, third and fourth against Valentine and stretched her lead to six holes after 11, having birdied the 10^th. Valentine did birdie the 14^th but that only cut her deficit to four holes and De Vries clinched her sixth victory in three days by winning the 15^th for a 5 and 3 success.

That raised Scotland's points on the day to 4 ˝, which meant they had won the match, whatever the outcome of the ties still to finish.

Smith made it 5 1/2pt in the bag when she beat Jane Rees by 4 and 3. After the third and fourth holes were exchanged, Smith won the sixth to take a lead she did not relinquish.

The Scot won the eighth to go two up, lost the ninth but then won the 11^th, 13^th and 14^th to surge four holes to the good. A half at the next ended the contest.

Wales got their second singles win, thanks to Jean O'Connor, who beat Moira Thomson by 5 and 4. O'Connor took a stranglehold on the outcome by winning the first, third, seventh, eighth and 10^th for a five-hole lead. She even birdied the 12^th to regain that advantage after the Scot had scored her only success at the 11^th. Halves at the 13^th and 14^th ended the match.

Scotland moved closer to winning the Senior Women's Home Internationals title for the first time at Newport Golf Club, Wales this morning by winning two foursomes and halving the other against defending champions Wales.
That meant the Scots, captained by Pamela Williamson, needed only 1 1/2pt for a draw or 2pt from the final set of five singles to land the Sue Johnson Trophy.
Ireland led England 2-1 after their foursomes.
Heather Anderson (Alyth) and Fiona Hunter (Baberton) halved the top foursome with Vicki Thomas and Jean O'Connor. Fiona holed a bunker shot at the 16th to square the match and the last two holes were halved.
Mary Smith (Tain) and Moira Thomson (Gullane Ladies) won by 3 and 2 against Janet Doleman and Jane Tees. The Scots were never behind after winning the first, second and fourth.
Fiona De Vries (St Rule) maintained her 100 per cent winning record when, in partnership with Dunbar's Noreen Fenton, she won the last foursome by 4 and 2 against Ann Lewis and Denise Richards.
Here again the Scots were in the driving seat after going three up after four holes.

Senior Scots women beat England for

first time - now for title ... but let's

not forget what happened at Irvine!

Scotland must be favourites to win the Senior Women's Home Internationals for the first time at Newport Golf Club, Wales tomorrow after achieving a first win over England since the over-50s series began six years ago.

The Scots, skippered by Pamela Williamson, took the morning foursomes 2-1 and, in a nerve-tingling finish to the second day, shared the singles 2 ˝-2 ˝ to win 4 ˝-3 ˝.

They are the only country with two wins out of two going into the third and final day when they complete their programme by playing defending champions Wales.

A word of warning … three weeks ago a younger Scotland team went into the final day of the Women's Home Internationals at Irvine, also needing only a draw for the title … and were beaten by Wales!

At Newport, Wales have found their form in time to test the Scots' championship aspirations. After losing 6-2 to England on the opening day, the Welsh dragon slew the Irish 4-1 in the singles for a 5-3 win after losing the foursomes 2-1.

Scotland's heroine so far as been St Andrews hotelier Fiona de Vries (St Rule) with four wins out of four. She's closely followed by Kathleen Sutherland (Royal Montrose), called into the team only last week when star player Lorna Bennett dropped out for domestic reasons.

Kathleen has not been used in the foursomes but she has won both her singles ties.

It was former Scottish girls champion Moira Thomson, pictured above,(Gullane Ladies) who pulled the Scots through to a notable win over the English.

She was trailing Jo Ashmore by two holes with four to play in the final singles with the Scots still needing half a point to clinch victory.

Moira responded to the pressure b y winning the 15^th and 16^th to square the match and then hung on through nail-biting halves at the 17^th and 18^th to deliver what was needed.

AND HERE'S A CLOSER LOOK AT THE SINGLES:

On a day of ideal scoring conditions – more than 30 birdies were scored during the day and there was also one eagle - England began the singles well enough with a 4 and 3 win by Christine Quinn – her fourth win in four sessions of play – over Heather Anderson in the top singles tie.
Quinn took control of the outcome with birdies at the fifth and 10^th on her way to a four-hole lead after 11 holes. Anderson won back the 12^th but Quinn quickly re-established a four-up advantage by winning the 14^th and a half at the next was sufficient.

Scotland moved ahead 3-2 overall with a fine 3 and 2 win by Fiona de Vries over Janet Melville. It was Fiona's fourth win of the tournament and she laid the foundations by winning the second, fifth and the seventh with a birdie.
The middle part of the match was rich in sub-par figures with the 10^th halved in birdies and Melville winning the 12^th with a birdie to get back to one down only for De Vries to birdie the 13^th and restore a two-hold lead. The Scot clinched victory by winning the 16^th.

Kathleen Sutherland, who came into the Scotland team late last week on the withdrawal of Lorna Bennett, maintained her 100 per cent record in the singles – she has not been used in the foursomes - by beating Susan Dye on the 18^th green.

This was another quality match, full of birdies – and that eagle. Dye got the first birdie at the short second and won the fourth to go two up. Sutherland came storming into the picture by winning six of the next seven holes, including birdies at the fifth and seventh, an eagle at the 10^th and a birdie at the 11^th.

That put the Scot three up but Dye wasn't finished yet. She birdied the 12^th and also won the 14^th to be only one down. Sutherland dug deep for yet another birdie to go two up again at the 15^th. Dye kept her hopes alive by winning the 17^th to be one down on the 18^th tee but Sutherland got the half she needed at the last for a one-hole victory at the end of a great match.

That meant Scotland, with 4pt in the bag, could not lose the match but there was a lot of golf still to be played.

England put a third point on the board when Lucy Newton beat Mary Smith by 3 and 1. Smith got off to a flying start by winning the first with a par and the second with a birdie.

Newton got into her stride to win the sixth, ninth, 10^th and 11^th to be two up before Smith won back the 12^th. After three tight halves, Newton got the decisive wins at the 16^th and 17^th.

Scotland led 4-3 but England, when Jo Ashmore was three up after six holes, having birdied the first and fifth against Moira Thomson, had high hopes of salvaging a draw.

But Thomson hung on in there and squared an exciting match at the 12^th. Ashmore broke clear again with wins at the 14^th and 15^th but her Scottish opponent rose to the occasion and the pressure. She squared the match by winning the 15^th and 16^th . The 17^th and 18^th were halved - and then the Scots celebrations began!

England’s hopes of winning the Senior Home Internationals at Newport suffered a setback today when they were beaten by Scotland 4˝-3˝. “It’s disappointing,” said England captain Sue Westall. “But good on Scotland, they played brilliantly. We shall be upbeat tomorrow and come out aiming for a win – and see what happens.”

This was the Scots’ second win of the series and puts them at the top of the table going into the third and final day, when they will play defending champions Wales. England and Wales both have one win apiece, while Ireland have lost both their matches. England play Ireland tomorrow.

Today’s match, played in ideal conditions, produced superb scoring. In the singles, England and Scotland scored 16 birdies and one eagle between them. Wales and Ireland produced another 11 birdies and two eagles.

England trailed Scotland after the morning foursomes when they won only one of the three games – and that was to prove crucial when the singles points were shared. The afternoon session was an intensely close battle.

England’s double senior champion, Chris Quinn, maintained her 100 per cent winning record with a 4 and 3 success to level the overall score. Scotland moved ahead again with wins over Janet Melville and Sue Dye – and with four points in the bag, could not be beaten. However, England battled on and, after Lucy Newton won her match, the team had hopes of a draw.

It all depended on the match of Jo Ashmore who was two up after 14 holes. But her opponent fought back and squared the match by winning the 15th and 16th – and the remaining two holes were halved.
